A man who fell though the ice while fishing has been landed with a $5400 bill. Neil Robbescheuten of southern Ontario was ice fishing on Lake Scugog near his home when a dense fog rolled in. He became disoriented trying to find his way back to shore and fell through the ice in a marshy area near some bulrushes. But he was able to pull himself out onto a tree stump, where he called 911. Three firetrucks responded to rescue him, but he later received a $5,392.78 invoice from the fire department. Robbescheuten, 62, says he plans to fight it because he worries it will make people think twice about calling emergency services when they are in trouble. Scugog fire chief Richard Miller said that the temperature was warm and rainy that weekend, and local conservation authorities had warned people to stay away from bodies of water.
