Almost a third of anglers were caught fishing without a licence during an Environment Agency spot-check last weekend. Tickets were issued to 53 of 178 anglers checked on south Essex waters. Anyone caught without a valid rod licence faces fines up to £2,500, and typical fines have been £250-£500 – quite a hit when you consider a UK adult rod licence costs £27. Lesley Robertson, the agency’s environmental crime team leader, said: “Those issued with offence tickets will almost certainly end up in court. We are disappointed to have found so many anglers illegally fishing.” The operation focused on Hanningfield Reservoir, south of Chelmsford, after the agency received reports of illegal fishing in the area.
