Fishing app checks weather and hotspots

A free fishing-specific weather app for Android and iPhone users has just been released. FishMarX is a GPS marking tool you can use  on the water to save important features. It means you can return to the exact place, or check the weather before heading back. It displays a map with your precise position and weather conditions, and you can save boat launches, buoys, channels, creek mouths, dropoffs, gravel, flats, mangrove holes, parking areas, riptides, river/stream outlets, timber, trailheads, weedbeds and so on. The weather aspect combines wind mapping, solunar times, tides, moon and hourly barometric changes. It’s been created by Bassmaster Magazine and Bassmaster.com, which joined forces with www.scoutlookweather.com, the weather service owned and operated by fishermen and hunters.  Users can “see the wind” for up to 72 hours at any location. Details here. There’s also a Fishlog app, available for a one-time fee of $3.99, which enables anglers to edit, manage, view and sort logs online You can export logs to Excel, or sort by any weather or moon condition, lure type or water condition to see what works best, as well as when and why those are optimum conditions. You can find this app here.

Editor and publisher of Classic Angling magazine. Founder member of UK Angling Writers' Association and current chairman. Former winner of Writer of the Year. I wrote a weekly angling column for The Independent for 23 years, having previously written columns for The Guardian and Sunday Mirror. If it swims, I'll fish for it: marlin or mackerel, trout or tench, salmon or snook. I've written several books on fishing, from one for the Duke of Edinburgh's award to the notorious Catchmore Sharks (don't look at the pictures) and Bob Nudd's autobiography, How to be the World's Best Fisherman. I love exotic travel for fishing (been to Mongolia and Ecuador, the Great Barrier Reef and Arunachal Pradesh) and wish I could afford to do such trips more often. My favourite fish? Anything with fins, though I have a special love for mahseer, and I’m Founder and former Chairman of the Masher Trust.
