A Windsor Bee lure made by the Birmingham jeweller James Gregory set a record for the bait when it sold for £2800 (excluding 17% buyers’ commission) at Mullock’s auction today (November 10). The 3in nickel on brass lure, made in the latter part of the 19th century, has a seven-section body with twin amber glass eyes and was stamped Gregory. (Not all his baits are marked). The rarest of the Gregory baits, it lacked its trebles but still proved a winner because of its unusual finish. Other highlights at the sale included an 1862 winch by Thomas Aldred of Oxford St, London, that went for £1200; a 3.5in Malloch sidecaster, £1400; a 3in Malloch patent Sun and Planet ebonite and brass salmon reel, £1000, and a collection of nine mint Abu Ambassadeur gold-plated reels in a display cabinet that made £2600.
