THIS sound familiar? Giant fish created by genetic modification terrorise village, eat dogs and people? Got all the elements, hasn’t it? And it’s made spookily topical by the UK Prime Minister planning a distraction in the Straits of Hormuz to take the public’s mind off man-eating fish.I could see this being made into an X-rated film, spawning a rash of man-eating pike headlines in newspapers and online. However, it falls down as a readable book because it desperately needs an editor’s hand, being full of grammar, spelling, punctuation amd factual errors.Let me give a few examples of some fine eggcorns: Chateau Neuf du Pape; Pasteur rather than pastor; Irish navies rather than navvies; velvet alter cloth; broached rather than breached: I could go on.More serious for anglers is that the author is no type of fisherman.Though fishing is at the core of the story, the anglers gaffs pike; uses a bobble float(!) and corned beef for bait. Nor do we get any clues about the identity of the nightmare GM fish, called piscium, which somehow makes its way in huge shoals from aYorkshire lake into the Thames in the heart of London. This harmless hokum could have been so much better with some decent research. But did the facts ever worry Hollywood?
