A very rare bow-fronted case of two lamprey mounted by the famed taxidermist John Cooper comes up for auction on Thursday (November 28). The fish were caught from the river Severn in 1924, though we use the word “caught” advisedly because the lawless, bloodsucking fish do not take a bait. This is the only known case of two lamprey. The fact that it is the work of Cooper adds significantly to the value, though it will be a surprise if it reaches the auction house’s estimate of £6o00-£8000. The eel-like creature is not the prettiest of fish, with the look that only a mother could love. It’s being sold by Peter Wilson of Nantwich, Cheshire. Details of bidding, etc here.
