A brace of barbel in a glass case set a world record when it sold for £18,000 (excluding 15% buyers’ commission) at Angling Auctions. The special appeal was that the fish weighed 14lb 3oz and 14lb, the largest pair of barbel ever cased. The fish were caught in 1934 from the Hampshire Avon in March 1934 and were mounted by Rowland Ward. The sale, at Chiswick, London, saw spectacular prices in many other areas, with an early Hardy Perfect selling for £11,000 and a set of 41 bound Hardy Angler’s guides climbing to £15,000.
