A treat for all: take a look at the entries for the 2012 annual flyfishing video awards, run by The Drake magazine. There’s some great photography here, and the contest limits entries to just five minutes so it grabs you straight away. This year’s winner was Predator by Gin Clear Media Production (though I preferred Gangster of the Flats, on catching giant trevally). Doesn’t matter if you’ve never held a fly rod: most of this stuff is awesome. The previous years’ entries are terrific too, especially especially 2009’s Once in a Blue Moon (just watch those guys cast!), Red Gold (2007) and my favourite, Running Down the Man (2006), on fishing a Mexican beach for roosterfish, which was made into a full-length film by Felt Soul Media. I love how they describe their target. “Roosters are the Elizabeth Hurley of fish. They are so hot – but at the same time very distinguished, and commanding respect.” I shall look at Elizabeth Hurley in a completely different way from now on.
